Import/Export confronts two things. On the one hand, a container filled with multi-coloured barrels, and on the other, 55 coffins. Placed directly facing one another, the two containers show how relations between North and South fluctuate. The barrels symbolise the importation of the raw materials necessary to Northern countries, while the coffins representing the 55 countries of Africa are a reference to the immigrants who perish making their way to Europe, and to the inequality of the exchanges impoverishing Africa. With this work, Barthélémy Toguo creates a sensational mise en scène which brings out the urgency of the situation.
